The stone carries most of the effect. A single larger stone reads differently from a row of small ones, and the same stone looks warmer in yellow gold than it does in platinum. The price updates with every change, so you can work towards the combination that fits rather than towards a fixed set.

Designing an engagement ring that fits the person
Before you look at stones, look at the hand you are buying for. A narrow band suits a slim finger; a wider band carries a larger stone without looking top-heavy. Someone who works with their hands all day will get more out of a lower setting than out of a high solitaire that catches on things. None of this is a rule, but it is the part most people wish they had thought about first.
If you are buying as a surprise, the ring size is the one thing you cannot design around. Borrowing a ring she already wears on the same finger is the most reliable way to get it right, and a ring that turns out to be a size out can be adjusted afterwards.
Which stone, and why
The diamond is the traditional choice and the one that returns the most light. What it gives back depends mostly on the cut: a well cut smaller stone can read more alive than a large one where quality was traded for size. Carat is weight, not width, so two stones of the same carat can sit quite differently on the finger.
Coloured stones are a real alternative rather than a compromise. Blue sapphire is close to a diamond in hardness and holds up to daily wear. Emerald is softer and needs a setting that protects its edges. Ruby carries the strongest colour of the three. A lab grown diamond has the same structure as a mined one and costs less at the same size, which usually buys either a larger stone or a cleaner one.
Metal, setting and band
White gold and platinum make a white diamond look brighter because there is no colour reflected back into it. Yellow gold does the opposite and gives the stone a warmer tone, which suits a slightly less white diamond well. Rose gold sits between the two and reads softer.
The setting decides how exposed the stone is. Claws hold the stone high and let light in from the side. A bezel wraps the girdle in metal, which is the safer choice for daily wear. A row of small stones set into the band adds light without adding height.
