It reaches 9 on the Mohs scale, second only to the diamond itself, so it takes knocks and cleaning without losing its surface.
The colour ranges from a light cornflower blue to a deep, almost ink-like tone, and the metal around it shifts what you see: white gold and platinum keep the blue cool and clear, yellow gold warms it up. You choose stone size, setting and band here and see the result before the ring is made.
What to look at in a sapphire
Colour carries the value in a coloured stone, not clarity. A sapphire with an even, saturated blue reads better than a larger stone with a patchy tone. Look at it under two different lights before deciding, because blue shifts more than most colours between daylight and lamplight.
A halo of small diamonds around the stone makes a medium sapphire look larger and adds the light that the sapphire itself does not return. If you prefer the colour to stand alone, a plain claw setting on a narrow band keeps all the attention on the stone.
Made to order
Every ring is made to order in a German goldsmith's workshop and the stone is set by hand. The engraving on the inside is free, delivery is free, and a certificate for the stone comes with the order.
