Fineness and what it changes
18 carat gold is 750 parts gold in a thousand and reads a deeper yellow. 14 carat is 585 parts and reads lighter, and the higher share of other metals makes it harder and more resistant to scratching. Neither is better; the deeper colour costs a little in hardness.
A white diamond set in yellow gold picks up a hint of warmth from the metal, which means a stone a grade or two below the top colour is harder to tell apart here than it would be in platinum. That is a straightforward way to put more of the budget into size.
