Length does more work than most people expect: a short chain sits at the collarbone and suits an open neckline, a longer one drops onto the chest and layers well with a second chain. Every piece is made to order.

Choosing chain and length
Chain length changes where the pendant lands and therefore what the piece does. Around 40 to 42 centimetres sits at the base of the neck and works under a collar. Around 45 centimetres is the common everyday length and drops just below the collarbone. Anything longer moves onto the chest and reads as a statement rather than as an everyday chain.
The gauge matters too. A fine chain keeps the attention on the pendant; a heavier chain becomes the piece itself. If you plan to wear two at once, pick two clearly different lengths so they do not tangle.
Metal and stone
White gold and platinum read cool and keep a white diamond bright. Yellow gold is warm and suits coloured stones and warmer skin tones. Rose gold is the softest of the three in tone. Silver is the low entry point if you want the budget in the stone rather than in the chain.
A diamond pendant is the piece that reads at any distance because it returns the most light. Coloured stones do something different: blue sapphire, ruby, emerald, amethyst and pink tourmaline carry colour that stays visible even when the light is flat.
